The RV shop where we stayed was located right next to the train tracks.....so needless to say we didn't need an alarm clock in the morning.....
Except for Gabe.....who could sleep through anything....
While we wait for Kevin to fix what needed to be fixed, we did what we have been doing and found a local laundry mat, where Gabe did some of his school work while waiting for the wash to be done.....
and we found the town Library. This library was just as old as some of the others we had been to, but it was bigger, even had a second floor!
Gabe was amazed and enjoyed taking Joey up and down the thin metal steps. Do you remember the last time you saw a child excited about a library? Made me smile:)
During our picnic lunch outside of the library we ran into a BLACK squirrel! The only other time we had seen a black one was in Wahl S.D. and it was stuffed!
It was a really cute town, small and everyone seemed to know everyone else. Could of been a contender for us, except for the whole winter thing....
The buildings were beautiful......
We had thought we were going to be there at least a few days, had prepared ourselves mentaly and were quite surprised when we were told that they would be done with our camper the next morning! So I picked up Joe at the shop and brought him back to the library so we could plan our next stop. Utica, Ohio to the home of Velvet Ice Cream!
You see one night we were indulging in Salty Carmel Pretzel ice cream from the grocery store. On the back of the carton it listed the history of Velvet Ice Cream and that they were located in Ohio.
Well Joe decided right then and there that if we were out that way we would stop and take a tour! Ends up that we weren’t very far from them and decided to stop on our way to Niagara Falls! We all went to sleep with smiles on our faces, tomorrow we would be on our way again!
The next morning it was grey and drizzly. It had rained through the night and everything was wet. We were all in good spirits though, the camper was fixed, we were leaving earlier than we thought and we were headed to Velvet Ice Cream!
I lined Tina’s car up to the trailer dolly like I have done for the last 3 months, slowly drove up on the ramps watching Joey to give me my clue to stop, I hit the gas to get over the last “hump” on the trailer, the tires hit the wet metal ramp and the car shot over the top of the tow dolly. Oh Dear God!
Joe immediately tells me to put it in reverse and hit the gas, I do that while he tries with all of his might to lift and push the car back off the front of the dolly, something that super man might have been able to do and in Joe's anger and adrenaline he might have been able to as well, if the car wasn’t already stuck on the tow dolly.
What a nightmare. I was heart sick. It was one of the worst case scenarios possible. And there was no way to throw it back at him and turn it around where I wouldn’t be the bad guy and it wasn’t my fault. I couldn’t blame it on anyone but myself.
Joe didn’t say a word. He just walked away. He didn’t throw anything. He didn’t swear. I new this was very very bad.
The only solution I could think of was to call a Tow Truck. It would cost a lot of money, but what other option did we have?
Well Joe is a scrapper and a self do it type of person. He just needed time to think and formulate a plan. He also needed some wood. Thankfully there was a shop behind us with pallets of wood and a nice man with a forklift who brought it to him.
I sat in the camper and did as I was told, lifted the camper on its jacks, higher, higher, until everything from the back of the camper started to slide to the front of the camper. Things fell off shelves, the camper creaked and groaned.
Tina god bless her just sat at the kitchen table and continued to do her work. I asked her how she was so calm. She said drugs, more importantly sedatives. Apparently she had been taking them all along, which explains a lot looking back on things.
Gabe on the other hand was a trooper. He was there to help Joey in anyway possible. And he so thoughtfully commented along the way. “OH MY GOSH! I didn’t think the camper could go up that high in the back! WOW! Dad is it ok that the camper is completely off the ground??? WATCH OUT! HOLY COW! Mom if you could see how that piece of wood just SHOT OUT from under the rear jacks like a bullet!!!”
And he took pictures.
It was one of those times when you wish you could just crawl under a blanket somewhere and pretend that everything was ok, that this was all just a bad dream.
Almost an hour later........
Joe put the car in neutral, told us all to gather in the front of the car, paying attention to the wood under both vehicles, and push with all of our might! Amazingly it slid off backwards and rolled right off of the dolly!
After piling up all the wood back on to the pallet and returning it to the shop keeper, the rain started to come down. Thankfully it held off until we were done!
I hugged Joe and told him I was sorry and how thankful I am that he did what he did. He is very creative when he puts his mind to it, and in a really bad situation he made everything all right again.
I also came to the conclusion that I will not be driving that car anywhere near the tow dolly again!
